09.12.2025 - Artikel

During the application process, you must prove that you meet the requirements for the visa to be issued (see Section 82 (1) of the Residence Act). Proof must always be provided in writing, i.e., by submitting documents.

The following documents are required in original and one copy for the application:

  • Completed and signed application form (original only)
  • Original passport and a copy of the data sheet/photo page and the pages of the passport containing German residence permits. The passport must have at least two blank pages and be valid for at least 3 months after entry. The passport will not be retained by the embassy during the application process.
  • Current biometric photo – please do not submit computer printouts of photos (original only)
  • Current Bulgarian residence permit (in the form of a residence card) of the applicant
  • Letter of admission from the German educational institution (university, university of applied sciences, or similar)
  • Educational qualifications that entitle you to enroll in a university program (e.g., high school diploma or similar, and, if applicable, university transcripts, university diploma) in German or English or with a translation.
Please check whether your school-leaving certificate entitles you to study at a university in Germany or in the country where you obtained the certificate. You can find evaluations of qualifications in the „anabin“ database.
If your school leaving certificate is listed in the search results, please submit it. If your qualification does not meet these criteria or is not listed, you can have your certificate evaluated by the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB).
  • Confirmation of application from the German educational institution (university, university of applied sciences, etc.)
Instead of the confirmation of application, please indicate your preferred place of study on the visa application form. If you have already contacted potential educational institutions or have already applied for a university degree program, please submit optional supporting documents (summarized in one document). Possible supporting documents include, for example:
    • Confirmation of participation in an entrance examination, for example from a preparatory college or a comparable institution
    • A reservation for a place at a university
    • Confirmation of proper application for a place at a university („Bewerber-Bestätigung“)
    • „Final notification“ from Uni-Assist („endgültige Mitteilung“)
After enrollment, the visa issued can be extended or converted into a residence permit by the local immigration office in Germany without you having to leave the country again.
If you are not admitted to study, you are required to leave the country after the visa expires.
  • Proof of the language skills required for the degree program (usually German) at least at level B1 of the European Framework of Reference. Proof of German language skills is generally provided by submitting a recognized language test certificate (Goethe-Institut; telc GmbH; ÖSD; TestDaF-Instituts e.V.). If the language of instruction is English, proof of English language skills can be provided by sufficient test results in IELTS or TOEFL. Proof is not required if the letter of admission confirms that the language skills are available or if the language skills are still to be acquired through preparatory measures.
  • Proof of financing for the applicant's living expenses and studies during the first year of study in the amount of EUR 992.00 per month or EUR 11,904 per year. If the student has to pay tuition fees, he or she must prove that he or she is able to cover these fees in addition to living expenses.
  • European health insurance with coverage of at least EUR 30,000 for the period from entry into Germany until enrollment plus one month.
  • A letter of motivation written and signed by the applicant in German or English, detailing the reasons for the intended course of study and plans for future career prospects (original only)
  • Detailed resume of the applicant in German or English, including information on places and periods of residence, school, academic, and professional education, and professional activities (original only)
  • Fee of EUR 75 (payable in cash or by Visa or MasterCard)

The Embassy reserves the right to request further documents from you in individual cases after you have submitted your application.

The completeness of the documents submitted does not constitute a claim to the issuance of the requested visa.
